A Better Chance is the oldest and only national organization of its kind, changing the life trajectory for academically talented youth of color via access to rigorous and prestigious educational opportunities for students in grades 6-12. Our mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society. We carry out our mission through our signature College Preparatory Schools Program (“CPSP”), which annually recruits, places, and supports about 500 Scholars at more than 300 member schools in 27 states.
POSITION OVERVIEW
This intern position is ideal for a college student who is interested in gaining experience in the field of education, community outreach, or youth-serving non-profit organizations. The intern will have the unique opportunity to lead projects, interface with educators throughout Los Angeles, and gain hands-on experience with one of the oldest and most respected non-profit organizations working with issues of equal access to education.
The Program Intern will work primarily with the Program Manager for the Southwest Region to coordinate and maximize recruitment efforts and student support within a targeted geographic area. This is a part-time unpaid position of no more than 10-12 hours per week. A Better Chance is happy to complete any paperwork so that the intern may receive either college credit or compensation from an external source.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducting information sessions and other activities geared towards student recruitment;
- Assisting with regionally pre-planned activities (for example, interview days, testing, referral nights, etc.);
- Assisting with the planning of activities for currently enrolled students in the Los Angeles area;
- Administrative duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
The Program Intern must be an independent worker with:
- a commitment to expanding the educational options available to Students of Color;
- excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
- outstanding research skills;
- strong written and verbal skills (Spanish language skills a plus but not required);
- a good sense of humor.
